About This Project
Hudur Waste management Project
The Hudur Waste Management Project has been developed to implement a structured and efficient system for waste collection and disposal within the town. This initiative is set to bring significant improvements to the town and its population by directly addressing critical concerns related to sanitation, environmental sustainability, and the overall well-being of both host communities and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Hudur town is in the Bakool region in the Southwest State of Somalia and is home to an estimated population of 63,256 households, including a substantial number of IDPs. Through a participatory consultation process that engaged representatives from the Municipality, Bakool regional administration, community leaders, IDP representatives, youth, and women’s groups, waste management emerged as a top priority during the recent Community Action Plan (CAP) review.
The project is anchored in a co-funding model designed to promote local ownership and long-term sustainability. The community has shown strong support for this approach by leading public awareness and sensitization initiatives that emphasize the importance of community participation and co-financing. These efforts are intended to reinforce community ownership and enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of service delivery.
To ensure effective local leadership, a District Project Implementation Unit (DPIU) has been established. This unit will provide leadership and oversight throughout the project’s lifecycle and is composed of representatives from the municipality, host, and IDP communities, with a strong emphasis on gender inclusion. The DPIU is tasked with mobilizing resources from the community, government, diaspora, and private sector, and acts as the main liaison between the community and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) during project implementation.
For project financing, the community and local administration have jointly committed to contribute USD 16,000, with each party raising USD 8,000. Upon confirmation of these contributions, IOM will provide matching funds of USD 44,644, bringing the total project budget to USD 60,644. The allocated funds will be used to procure new garbage collection trucks, acquire necessary sanitation tools and equipment, and prepare a dedicated waste disposal site.
The Hudur Waste Management Project exemplifies a collaborative and sustainable approach to addressing the town’s waste and sanitation needs. By leveraging strong community engagement, transparent governance, and a strategic co-funding framework, the project is poised to deliver enduring benefits to all residents of Hudur town.
