About This Project
Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Juba region and administrative center of Jubbaland State, is a key port city in southern Somalia. The city comprises seven main villages: Alanley, Shaqalaha, Guul-wade, Faanoole, Farjano, Waamo, and New Kismayo. Over the years, Kismayo has experienced political tightness with Somalia's federal government. Even so, the city has maintained relative stability in both governance and security. This stability has supported hope for economic growth and infrastructure improvements, notably through development initiatives funded by the World Bank. As the state capital, Kismayo serves as a hub for commerce, fishing, and agriculture. Basic social services remain functional, and the city continues to benefit from humanitarian and development programs delivered through collaboration among the state government, federal institutions, and international partners. The city continues to pursue broader socio-economic and infrastructural progress. As part of addressing infrastructure challenges, a collaborative co-funding activity is being launched to improve Farjano–Kismayo road conditions. Consultations with district authorities and local communities, particularly in Farjano Village, have identified road rehabilitation as a top priority. These discussions underlined the vital role of transportation in facilitating access to markets, healthcare, and education. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is partnering with the local community through this Co-Funding System (CFS), which emphasizes ownership and collaboration. The community will contribute $5,000, while IOM will add $30,000. This partnership aims not only to repair roads but also to promote community engagement and good governance. Together, the residents of Kismayo and IOM are setting a precedent for future collaborative efforts, highlighting the importance of community involvement in development projects and paving the way for a more stable future in Kismayo District.
